Introduction
The design revolves around creating a residence for an old couple with a sense of classical ideology and modernist understanding. The site is a barren landscape that sits on Hyderabad’s fringe belt. The uneven topography dictates the composition creating “pockets” of the outside in the interiors of the building. The radicle here was to create a space that speaks with its elderly users and listens to their boundless adventures with the utmost silence.
Program
The residence was intended to carry three major genres of spaces, the central space, the living spaces, and the utilities. The central area (the living room) becomes the anchor holding the utilities and the pockets of rooms together catering to the design’s locus. This way the space offers extreme transparency and is focused on a linear central visual node that opens to the outside at multiple vistas simultaneously keeping them united.
The Axis’s Rigidity and its Organic Journey
An axis recites this one’s story, it divides the composition into an equal share but training the line leads to an undulated tour. The space gradually reveals itself that is bound with its central truss. At every corner of the axis, the inside takes a glimpse of the outside gradually blurring the boundaries that are presumed between the built and the unbuilt.
The Physical Approach
Materiality played a vital role in creating a contemporary-classical veneer. Built with locally available material, it tries to achieve poetic spaces that have simplicity without compromising on any of the modern mortal comforts. The built structure is a rammed earth dwelling developed on sustainable methods that include passive cooling techniques. And in a way it holds on to the idea of years of experience with a novel tangent.
Ecology of the Site
The proposition of the design majorly was to capture the land’s traits and work its way to create a balance that the barren landscape was deprived of. The treescapes were gracefully staged in spaces that enhanced the user’s experience irrespective of the outside inside. As the land had an undefined language of landscape, the building’s footprint was positioned strategically to create uninformed pockets where the landscape further expands the user’s experience. Thus, the design qualitatively uses the site’s void character to derive the residence’s adaptive nature.
In Retrospect
The project’s intention was to cater to the humble life and aim light at the re-establishment of perpetual ambiance within the surroundings where the couple could gauge the simple affairs in the house. Here the physicality became a medium and the true soul is carried by the audience to whom the design is directed. And the residence is one such archive that narrates the art of the millennial touch to Classical ideology.
In the end, does physical language always resonate with the overall well-being of it’s design?
